I recently lost my job, and now I'm 2 months behind on my two credit card payments. One is for CapitalOne and the other for Discover. I already contacted the companies and they said it was fine. However, I also need to catch up on car payment. How long after you missed payment, does a credit card company send you into collection. 3 months, 4 months, 5 ect? Does anyone know.
Every creditor is different....most have in-house collections if you are 4 or less months past due. After 6 months of continuous non payment, the card will get charged off as bad debt. Do whatever you can to prevent this as charge offs are a disaster for your credit rating. After a charge off, they'll either write off the debt and walk away from it or take you to court. If you have money to pay only one account, then pay the car payment. Do whatever you can to prevent a repo in any form. Turning the car in yourself is just the same. If they repo the car they'll sell it at a huge discount and come right back after you for the remaining balance. If your debts are huge and beyond your ability to pay, then consider filing for Chapter 7.
Depends on the company. While searching for a perm position you can sign up with temp agencies. They are pretty good at using you if you have a vehicle. As you can get to the work site quicker than someone on the bus.
Cat Dad is right on. Your priorities are housing, family and living expenses. Keep your car loan reasonably current, particularly if you're with a local bank or credit union. You need it. Pay the credit card companies what you can. Don't break off contact with them and don't make promises that you can't keep. Make sure they generally believe that you are doing the best that you can. If you're a renter without much in the way of hard assets.it is unlikely that they will go the court route. More likely they will try to settle with you for a lesser amount. And, only settle if you them up for the debt to be be reported as a "negotiated settlement". Get in writing. You likely have them more over a barrel than they do you. Don't let them bully you. .
